Hegewisch Chicago, one of city’s 77 community areas, is a unique neighborhood located on the far south side. Bordered by Riverdale and South Deering to the west, the East Side to the north, the village of Burnham to the south, and the city of Hammond, Indiana, to the east.
Historical Roots
Hegewisch was founded in 1883 by Adolph Hegewisch, president of the U.S. Rolling Stock Company.
Six years before Chicago annexed the town, his vision was to create an “ideal workingman’s community” along a rail line. Although his ambitious canal plans were never realized, Hegewisch became a hub for steel mills and a driving employment force in the early 20th century.
Industrial Heritage
The neighborhood’s industrial past is evident in its landscape, with remnants of steel mills and factories that once thrived there.
