76th Street borders Avalon Park to the north, South Chicago Avenue to the east, 87th Street to the south, and Stony Island Avenue to the west. The neighborhood covers approximately 1.25 square miles.

Historical Background

German and Irish railroad workers originally settled in the area in the 1880s. Initially known as Pierce’s Park, the name was changed to Avalon Park in 1910, thanks to the efforts of the Avalon Park Community Church. The neighborhood experienced significant growth after installing a sewer system in 1910, which helped drain the marshlands and facilitate further development.
